PATIENT EDUCATION

Services

James H. Gilsdorf, DDS, MS offers a full array of orthodontic services to help you maintain healthy and aesthetic smile. You can read more on this page about specific services.

Initial Oral Examination
Your initial oral examination includes a visual examination, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis and treatment recommendations. We will also take x-rays, which includes the panoramic x-ray for proper diagnosis of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth as well as the bite-wing x-ray series for proper diagnosis of proximal decay of posterior teeth.

Orthodontics
ORTHODONTICS is the specialty in dentistry concerned with the prevention, guidance, and correction of problems in both the growing and the mature dental and facial structures.

An ORTHODONTIST is a dentist who has completed at least two additional years of specialty training in orthodontics at an accredited university after graduation from dental school.

Successful Orthodontic Treatment
is a partnership of effort between the orthodontist, family dentist, the patient, and/or the parent. Both the doctor and staff are dedicated to the patient's best possible care. In order to attain this goal, patients must follow instructions carefully so that the teeth can move properly, and on schedule.

Protecting Your Health
We know that many people today are concerned about the risk of contracting an infectious disease through dental treatment. The simple fact is, because we follow the infection control guidelines of the Ohio State Dental Board, etc., the chance of any infection is extremely remote. You stand a better chance of being struck by lightning than of contracting a disease through dental treatment.

For your protection we maintain the most up-to-date methods of sterilization and infection control. We will gladly answer any questions you may have about our methods and about your health and safety.

Periodontal Treatment

You should have a standard cleaning at least twice a year. A periodontal treatment includes an Adult Prophy (basic cleaning). If it has been over a year since your last cleaning, possible treatment will include either Periodontal Scaling (deeper) or Root Planning and Scaling (requires anesthetic).

Mouth Guards

Whether you are an athlete or casual sports participant, you should wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth. If you grind your teeth while you sleep, a bite guard will help reduce symptoms of TMJ.
